It's easy to know the right answers about Jesus and still walk toward the cross unmoved, the way the disciples heard the details of Christ's suffering and let the words slide right past them. Bartimaeus had nothing to bring, no achievement, no position, no reputation, and that emptiness is exactly what let him see clearly what he needed. Most days we're more like the disciples than we'd like to admit: busy, informed, even excited about Jesus, but quietly assuming we're already fine. This passage asks whether we still know we need mercy, or whether we've simply forgotten.
